premature infant
Born too soon
A premature infant is a baby born before the normal gestation period is complete—typically before 37 weeks.
Also called a preemie.
Premature infants often require specialized medical care because their organs haven't fully developed: The premature infant spent six weeks in the NICU.
The earlier the birth, the greater the health risks.
