subpolar
Almost polar regions
Subpolar describes regions or conditions just outside the polar zones—between the Arctic or Antarctic circles and the temperate latitudes.
The climate is cold but not as extreme as at the poles: subpolar waters, subpolar forests.
In oceanography and meteorology, subpolar often refers to specific circulation patterns or air masses: the subpolar gyre, subpolar lows.
