sistering

Joining parallel lumber

Sistering is a construction technique where a new structural member—typically a joist, rafter, or stud—is attached alongside a damaged or weakened one to reinforce it.

The new piece runs parallel to the old, sharing the load: We sistered the cracked floor joists rather than replacing them entirely.

The term comes from the idea of placing two identical members side by side, like siblings.
