damp proofing
Blocks rising wetness
Damp proofing is the treatment of walls, floors, or foundations to prevent moisture from penetrating a building.
A damp-proof course is a barrier—usually a layer of waterproof material—installed in masonry to stop groundwater from rising through capillary action: The builder installed damp proofing before laying the floor.
The term covers both preventive measures in new construction and remedial treatments for existing structures.
