Stovepipes are the metal tubes that vent smoke and gases from a stove to the outside.
The shape gives us stovepipe hats—the tall cylindrical top hats of the 19th century.
In organizations, stovepipes are isolated channels where information flows vertically but not horizontally: The agency's stovepipes prevented departments from sharing intelligence.
Stovepipe as a verb means to bypass normal channels: He stovepiped the report directly to the director.
