millinery

Art of hats

Millinery is the craft of designing, making, and selling women's hats, or the hats themselves.

A shop specializing in such goods is also called a millinery.

The term derives from Milan, Italy, which was once famous for exporting fine goods including fashionable headwear.

Though less common today than in earlier centuries when hats were essential accessories, millinery persists as both a trade and an art form, particularly for occasions like weddings and horse races.
