footplate
Where engineer stands
A footplate is a platform for standing, especially the floor area of a locomotive cab where the engineer and fireman work.
British railway terminology uses footplate more than American English does: He spent thirty years on the footplate.
The term extends to any metal plate designed as a standing surface on machinery or vehicles.
