stick welding

Electrode-based metal fusion

Stick welding is an arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode coated in flux to join metals.

The electrode, resembling a stick or rod, conducts current to create an arc between itself and the workpiece, melting both to form the weld while the flux coating produces a protective gas shield.

Also called shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), it's valued for its simplicity, portability, and effectiveness on rusty or dirty metals.

He learned stick welding before moving on to MIG and TIG techniques.
