lap joint
Overlapping timber bond
A lap joint is a woodworking or metalworking connection where two pieces overlap rather than meeting end to end.
The overlapping surfaces are fastened together with glue, screws, rivets, or welds.
Lap joints are simple to make and appear in everything from picture frames to sheet metal seams: The carpenter cut a lap joint where the rails meet the stiles.
