stewing

Brooding over something

Stewing is a cooking method in which food simmers slowly in liquid over low heat, typically in a covered pot.

The technique works especially well for tougher cuts of meat, which become tender through the long, moist cooking process.

Beyond the kitchen, stewing describes someone dwelling anxiously or angrily on something: She spent the whole weekend stewing over his remarks.

To let someone stew is to leave them alone with their worry or irritation.
