steel guitar
Lap-played instrument
A steel guitar is a type of guitar played horizontally, with strings facing upward, using a metal slide (the "steel") pressed against the strings rather than fretted fingers.
The technique produces a distinctive sliding, sustained tone.
Steel guitars are central to Hawaiian music and country music.
The term covers both acoustic lap steel guitars and the more complex pedal steel guitar, which uses foot pedals and knee levers to change pitch: The pedal steel guitar gave the song its classic Nashville sound.
