open tuning

Non-standard guitar setup

Open tuning is a guitar tuning where the strings sound a chord when strummed without fretting any notes.

Standard tuning requires finger placement to form chords, but open tunings let the open strings ring as a major chord—typically G, D, or E.

Slide guitarists favor open tunings because a single finger or slide across all strings produces clean chords at any fret position.

He retuned to open G for the blues number.
