upright bass

Tall jazz strings

An upright bass is a large stringed instrument played vertically, resting on the floor and leaning against the musician's body.

It's the same instrument as a double bass or contrabass—upright distinguishes it from the electric bass guitar, which is held horizontally: She switched from upright bass to electric when the band went rock.
