root ball
Soil-wrapped plant base
The root ball is the mass of roots and surrounding soil that comes with a plant when it's dug up or removed from a container.
When transplanting, you keep the root ball intact to minimize shock: Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball.
The term appears constantly in gardening instructions for trees, shrubs, and potted plants.
