knotwork
Interwoven decorative loops
Knotwork is decorative design featuring interlaced lines that weave over and under each other in patterns without apparent beginning or end.
The style is most associated with Celtic art—the intricate borders of illuminated manuscripts, carved stone crosses, and metalwork: The Book of Kells contains elaborate knotwork.
Similar interlacing appears in Norse, Islamic, and other ornamental traditions.
