yellow card
Referee's formal admonishment
A yellow card is a warning issued by a referee in soccer and some other sports, shown by holding up a yellow card to signal that a player has committed a serious foul or unsporting behavior.
Two yellow cards in the same match result in a red card and ejection from the game.
The term extends metaphorically to any formal warning that puts someone on notice: Consider this your yellow card—one more incident and you're out.
