penalty area
Eighteen-yard zone
The penalty area is the rectangular zone in front of each goal on a soccer field, extending eighteen yards out.
Fouls committed by defenders inside this area result in a penalty kick for the opposing team.
Goalkeepers may handle the ball only within their own penalty area.
