encrustation

Accumulated surface layer

Encrustation is a hard coating or crust that forms on a surface, typically through accumulation or deposit: mineral encrustations on the pipes, barnacle encrustations on the hull.

The word applies to natural buildup—salt, calcium, rust—or decorative overlays of ornamental material.

Also spelled incrustation.
