sol-fa

Do-re-mi system

Sol-fa is a system for teaching music using syllables (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti) to represent the notes of a scale.

As a verb, to sol-fa is to sing using these syllables rather than lyrics: The choir sol-faed through the difficult passage before adding words.

The system helps singers learn pitch relationships and sight-read music.
