sight-singing

Reading music aloud

Sight-singing is the skill of singing music from written notation without having heard it before.

Musicians develop this ability through ear training, learning to translate symbols on the page into accurate pitches and rhythms in real time: The choir director tested our sight-singing with an unfamiliar hymn.

Also called sight-reading when applied to singing.
