mediant
Between tonic, dominant
The mediant is the third note of a musical scale, sitting midway between the tonic (first note) and the dominant (fifth note).
In C major, the mediant is E.
The term comes from its position mediating between the scale's two most important notes.
The melody rested briefly on the mediant before resolving to the tonic.
