solfege

Scale-singing practice method

Solfege is a system for teaching music that assigns syllables to notes of a scale—do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti.

Singers learn to sight-read by associating these syllables with pitch relationships: We practiced solfege exercises for an hour.

The method dates to medieval Italy and remains central to ear training in music education.

Also spelled solfège.
