snow chains

Winter wheel wraps

Snow chains are metal chains wrapped around vehicle tires to improve traction on snow and ice.

They bite into slippery surfaces where rubber alone would spin uselessly.

Most drivers keep them in the trunk for mountain passes or severe winter storms: We had to pull over and put on snow chains before crossing the pass.

Also called tire chains.
