snap ring
Groove-seated fastener clip
A snap ring is a metal fastener—a split ring that fits into a groove to hold components in place on a shaft or inside a housing.
The ring has a gap that allows it to be compressed or expanded for installation, then snaps back to hold position: Use snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring from the axle.
Also called a circlip or retaining ring.
