cash skimming
Stealing register money
Cash skimming is the theft of cash before it enters a business's accounting system, making it invisible on the books.
An employee might pocket payments without ringing them up, or a business owner might underreport revenue to evade taxes.
The term also covers criminals installing devices on ATMs or card readers to steal account information: The FBI arrested a ring running a cash skimming operation at gas stations.
