sinus cavity
Air-filled skull space
The sinus cavities are air-filled spaces in the skull bones surrounding the nose.
There are four pairs: frontal (above the eyes), maxillary (in the cheekbones), ethmoid (between the eyes), and sphenoid (behind the nose).
They lighten the skull, produce mucus, and affect vocal resonance.
When inflamed or blocked, they cause the pressure and pain of sinusitis: My sinus cavities are killing me.
