air pocket

Turbulence-causing void

An air pocket is a localized region where air behaves differently from its surroundings.

In aviation, it's a downdraft or area of thin air that causes an aircraft to drop suddenly: We hit an air pocket and the plane lurched.

More generally, any trapped pocket of air: Air pockets in the concrete weakened the structure.
