hard palate

Oral cavity roof

The hard palate is the bony front portion of the roof of the mouth, covered by a thin layer of tissue.

It separates the mouth from the nasal cavity and provides a rigid surface against which the tongue presses during speech and swallowing.

Distinguished from the soft palate, the fleshy rear portion that ends in the uvula.
