sieverts

Ionizing exposure measure

Sieverts is the plural of sievert, the standard unit measuring radiation dose absorbed by living tissue.

Named for Swedish physicist Rolf Sievert, it accounts for the biological effects of different radiation types.

Small exposures are measured in millisieverts: The CT scan delivered about 10 millisieverts.

A dose of several sieverts causes acute radiation sickness; higher doses are fatal.
