animal sidekicks
Loyal beast friends
Animal sidekicks are the loyal creature companions who accompany protagonists in stories, films, and video games.
They provide comic relief, emotional support, or practical assistance—think Toto in *The Wizard of Oz* or Pikachu in *Pokémon*.
The term extends to real-life pets that seem unusually attuned to their owners: My cat is basically my animal sidekick—she follows me everywhere.
