quirky sidekick
Oddball loyal assistant
A quirky sidekick is the oddball companion to a protagonist—the wisecracking friend, the eccentric assistant, the lovable weirdo who provides comic relief and occasionally saves the day.
The trope is everywhere in fiction: Every action hero needs a quirky sidekick.
Such characters are defined by their peculiar habits, offbeat humor, or unusual skills that complement the more conventional lead.
