side-wheelers

Lateral paddle vessels

Side-wheelers are steamboats propelled by large paddle wheels mounted on either side of the hull, prominent on American rivers in the 19th century.

The design offered stability in shallow water but made the exposed wheels vulnerable to damage.

The old side-wheelers carried passengers up and down the Mississippi.
