shovel pass
Quick underhand throw
A shovel pass is a short, underhand football throw, typically lateral or slightly forward, where the quarterback tosses the ball with a shoveling motion to a nearby receiver or running back.
It combines elements of a handoff and a pass: He flipped a quick shovel pass to the fullback for a five-yard gain.
