dropback
Passer steps backward
A dropback is the quarterback's backward movement from the line of scrimmage before throwing a pass.
The term describes both the action and the resulting pocket position: He took a five-step dropback and found his receiver downfield.
Dropback passing contrasts with play-action or scrambling, where the quarterback moves laterally or fakes a handoff.
