shivahs

Week-long Jewish mourning

Shivahs is the plural of shivah, the weeklong Jewish mourning period observed after the burial of a close relative.

During shivah, mourners traditionally stay home and receive visitors who offer condolences.

The practice of visiting is called "sitting shivah": We went to pay our respects at the Goldbergs' shivah.

Also spelled shiva.
