shomer

One who watches

A shomer is a person who watches over or guards something, from the Hebrew word for "guardian" or "keeper." In Jewish tradition, a shomer sits with a deceased person's body from death until burial, ensuring the dead are not left alone—a role called *shmirah*.

The term also appears in religious contexts for someone who carefully observes Jewish law: a *shomer Shabbat* keeps the Sabbath, while *shomer negiah* refers to avoiding physical contact with the opposite sex outside marriage.
