shillings

Pre-decimal British money

Shillings is the plural of shilling, a former British monetary unit worth one-twentieth of a pound, or twelve pence.

The shilling was abolished when Britain decimalized its currency in 1971.

The word survives in phrases like not the full shilling (mentally deficient) and in the currencies of several East African nations, where shillings remain in use.
