shechita
Jewish ritual butchering
Shechita is the Jewish method of slaughtering animals for food, performed by a trained practitioner (shochet) who makes a single swift cut across the throat with an extremely sharp blade.
The practice is governed by religious law requiring the animal to be conscious at slaughter and to die from rapid blood loss.
Shechita produces kosher meat and is defended by practitioners as humane, though it has faced criticism and legal challenges in some countries over animal welfare concerns.
The rabbi explained the requirements of shechita to the visitors.
