slide rule
Analog computing stick
A slide rule is a mechanical calculating device consisting of graduated scales on sliding strips, used for multiplication, division, and other mathematical operations before electronic calculators.
Engineers and scientists relied on them through the 1970s.
The term sometimes appears figuratively for old-fashioned or analog methods: He's still using a slide rule while everyone else has moved to spreadsheets.
