deadband

Unresponsive input range

A deadband is a range of values in a control system where no action is taken—the system remains inactive until input exceeds the threshold.

Engineers build deadbands into thermostats, joysticks, and other controls to prevent constant small corrections or to filter out noise.

The thermostat has a two-degree deadband, so it won't cycle on and off constantly.

Also called dead zone or neutral zone.
