semi-colon

Stronger than comma

A semi-colon is a punctuation mark (;) that creates a pause stronger than a comma but weaker than a period.

It typically joins two closely related independent clauses without a conjunction: She loved the city; he preferred the country.

Semi-colons also separate items in lists when those items contain commas.

Also spelled semicolon.
