self-objectification

Treating oneself as object

Self-objectification is treating yourself as an object to be looked at rather than a person who acts.

The term comes from feminist psychology, describing how people—especially women—internalize an outside observer's view of their own bodies.

This leads to monitoring appearance, comparing oneself to ideals, and valuing how one looks over how one feels or what one can do.

She recognized her constant mirror-checking as self-objectification.
