curtilage
Yard around home
Curtilage is the area of land immediately surrounding a house or dwelling, including outbuildings, yards, and enclosed spaces that are part of daily domestic life.
The term matters primarily in law, where curtilage receives the same privacy protections as the home itself: Police needed a warrant to search the curtilage.
A detached garage or fenced backyard typically falls within the curtilage; an open field does not.
