degumming

Clearing sticky coating

Degumming is removing gum or gummy substances from something.

In silk processing, degumming strips the natural coating (sericin) from raw silk fibers to reveal their luster.

In oil refining, it removes phospholipids and other impurities from crude vegetable oils.

The term appears wherever sticky residues must be eliminated: degumming the rollers on an old printing press.
