emit

Release into surroundings

To emit is to send forth or give off.

Light sources emit light, factories emit pollutants, speakers emit sound.

The word applies to anything released outward from a source: The engine emitted a strange grinding noise.

Emit suggests continuous or repeated release rather than a single burst—radiation emits steadily, a person emits a gasp only in the moment.
