sea cave

Wave-carved cavity

A sea cave is a hollow carved into coastal rock by the relentless action of waves.

These formations occur where the ocean exploits weaknesses in cliff faces—fractures, softer stone, or fault lines—gradually eroding cavities that can extend deep into the rock.

Some sea caves are accessible only by boat or at low tide: We kayaked into the sea cave at dawn.
