Sea monkeys are brine shrimp sold as novelty pets, marketed since the 1950s with fantastical advertising that depicted them as humanoid creatures.
The eggs arrive in a dormant state and hatch when added to water, creating the illusion of "instant life." The name and cartoon imagery bear no resemblance to the tiny crustaceans that actually emerge: The sea monkeys didn't look anything like the ad showed.
