nauplii

Baby shrimp stage

Nauplii is the plural of nauplius, the earliest larval stage of many crustaceans including shrimp, crabs, and barnacles.

These tiny, often microscopic organisms have a simple oval body with three pairs of appendages and a single eye.

In aquaculture, nauplii—particularly brine shrimp nauplii—are commonly used as live food for fish fry and other small aquatic animals.

The hatchery produces millions of nauplii daily to feed juvenile fish.
