sea grapes

Green ocean bubbles

Sea grapes are small, round, translucent green seaweed bulbs that grow in clusters resembling grapes.

Popular in Japanese cuisine as a garnish or salad ingredient, they pop in the mouth with a briny flavor: The sushi platter came with a side of sea grapes.

Also called green caviar or *umibudo*.

Separately, sea grape refers to a coastal shrub native to the Caribbean whose fruit clusters similarly resemble grapes.
