scrofula
Neck gland swelling
Scrofula is tuberculosis of the lymph nodes, especially in the neck, causing swelling and sometimes skin ulcers.
Once called "the king's evil" because the royal touch was believed to cure it.
The disease was common before modern antibiotics and sanitation.
The child's scrofula left visible scars on her neck.
